- Works in an Automotive Craft Shop with primary concern for providing guidance to 3 or more authorized patrons in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of personally owned vehicle.
- Provides assistance and technical guidance to participants on practical aspects of make-up, operation and installation of components, assemblies and systems of various types of privately owned automotive vehicles of both American and foreign manufacture.
- Selects, modifies and uses various instructional methods to explain the procedures necessary for diagnosing malfunctioning engines, transmission, brakes, clutches, drive trains, exhaust system, suspension and electrical system.
- Demonstrates proper trade techniques and practices required for major repairs such as engine overhaul (rings, valves, rod bearings, lifters, etc.) and minor repair and tune-up, the use of testing and diagnosing devices, and shop equipment such as electric repair drills, air tools, battery charges, spark plug cleaning and testing equipment, brake lathes, hydraulic jacks, lifting hoists, wrenches and various other hand and special tools.
- Explains safety precautions to be followed in using the tools and equipment.
- As necessary, checks out tools and equipment to customers and may collect amount for user fees.
- Performs maintenance and repair of equipment as required.
- Maintains records pertaining to tools and equipment on hand, attendance and other data reflecting the training activities of the shop.
- May initiate requisitions for replenishment of both expendable and non-expendable equipment and supplies.
- Discusses with the supervisor and recreation assistants/aids involved in the automotive crafts program activities, the interests, needs and other issues concerning the training and support of the shop patrons.
- Conducts practical training sessions under a semi-formal structured training program to develop patrons aptitudes as well as provide an opportunity for skill development in maintenance/repair brakes, battery, fuel system, timing and tuning, headlights, etc.., of personally-owned vehicles.
- As an example, provides group instruction in wheel balancing, timing adjustment, or basic body repair (filling and sanding).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Ability to inspect
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
Conditions of Employment:
1. A one-year probationary period may be required.
2. Meet all qualification/eligibility requirements.
3. Satisfactorily complete an employment verification check.
